Troops Enter Quake's Epicenter

On Tuesday Evening Soldiers finally arrived at the epicenter of China's earthquake. Rescue efforts have been hindered, because the only road leading into the area was buried under huge rockslides. The road had to be cleared before rescue workers could make it to the scene.
A team of more than 300 troops arrived on Tuesday and so far have pulled more than 1,000 people from the rubble of fallen buildings according to disaster relief headquarters. A group of soldiers who arrived at Yingxiu Town of Wenchuan on foot Tuesday afternoon said more than 70 percent of the roads were damaged and almost all of the bridges had collapsed. They said 3,000 of the town's total population of 12,000 are known to have survived. The soldiers distributed food and water to the children and injured in the town, and more supplies are scheduled to be airdropped into the area.

Immediately after the disaster, China launched a massive relief operation. Over 20,000 soldiers and police arrived in the areas of the earthquake, with 30,000 on the way.
