On may 17th, the motorized infantry brigade from the Jinan Military Area Command was ordered to rescue the Tibetan villagers cut off in their village in Pingwu County, Sichuan Province. The terrain made it impossible for helicopters to land, so 80 rescuers had to hike on foot to get to the village. Each soldier carried 40 kilograms of medicine and food. A total of ten landslides and mudslides were encountered on the road to the village made the hike particularly difficult. The soldiers hiked the 120 kilometers in 33 hours without taking a break before reaching the village Sunday afternoon, arriving 22 hours ahead of schedule. Upon arriving in the village, the rescuers set up tents and gave first-aid to the villagers in critical conditions. They then helped the uninjured villagers to evacuate the area. Many seniors and children needed to be carried, while the severely injured were born on stretchers.
