As of 11:05 Thursday morning, 33 tourists from England, the United States, and France arrived in Chengu, from the giant panda town of Wolong via military helicopter. The tourists, who had been stranded since the giant quake hit, are all in good health. Yang Wei, Captain of the helicopter stated "They were in anxiety when we arrived in Wolong, but soon relaxed after getting aboard the chopper and thanked us." Telecommunications had been cut since Monday, and the tourists' condition were not known until Wednesday afternoon when Zhang Wenxian, an official of the Wolong Giant Panda Administration, called via satellite telephone.
The Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area had a large number of visitors when the quake hit. The two roads leading to the area were cut off, but the sightseeing areas were safe. According to a spokesman for the Jiuzhaigou Tourism Administration stated that more than 3,000 people had been evacuated by Wednesday, and the remaining 2,900 were expected to be evacuated on Thursday.
