Transportation throughout China was barely affected by the giant earthquake that hit China's Sichuan Province on Monday May 12th. The only major transportation disruption came at Chengdu's Shuangliu Airport, and it was reopened at 9:45pm the same day allowing visitors to leave the city.
Due to the earthquake, the Shuangliu Airport's radar, and control tower were destroyed. To ensure that the airport opened as soon as possible China's Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) began emergency measures to reopen the airport. An outdoor platform was set up near the runway, and using three broadcasting stations to instruct planes in landing and take-offs. Sichuan's 9 other airports were able to take the majority of the flights, further easing Shuangliu Airport's congestion.
All other modes of transportation throughout China have remained unaffected and visitors to China's tours have remained relatively unaffected by the earthquake.
